Updating Your Home Exterior On A Budget

People are always changing and growing, and as we change, so do our style preferences!

This means that it’s no surprise that your beautiful, beige house you loved so much 5 years ago is now making you feel less than enthusiastic. The good news is just about any home can be updated and modernized to fit your style with just a few coats of paint. However, not everyone has the means to repaint a whole house exterior or hire a professional, so what can they do instead?

Here at The Repaint Specialists we want to help you feel great when you come home everyday, no matter what your budget, so we’ve come up with a simple solution to get you off on the right track!

You can dramatically improve the style of your home with something as simple as changing the colour of your front door! In fact, door painting (or repainting) is one of the most common DIY home projects out there, and if done right, it can come out stunning!

How To Get It Right

1. Choose Your Paint Wisely

The first thing we tend to think about when it comes to paint is colour. You want to pick a colour that not only matches the rest of your home, but also creates the vibe you’re looking for and matches your personality! You can use paint swatches or any one of the free apps available, such as the ones featured in this blog. However, you also want to consider QUALITY! It’s easy to fall into the discount trap, but we promise, using a high quality paint will save you from headaches, lost dollars, and regret in the long run. Aim for paint brands such as Behr, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin-Williams. If cost is really holding you back, try looking for these brands (and a colour you like) in the ‘mistint’ section!

2. Remove Everything Before You Begin

Before you begin painting, remember to remove all nails, hinges, door knobs etc., and be sure to place painter’s tape on any windows if your door has them!

3. Primer Is A Prime Idea

Before painting, always use a primer! It may be tempting to skip this step, but a primer will ensure a smooth professional finish. No one wants their front door looking amateur with blots, and uneven paint!

4. Paint The Corners First

Painting corners nicely requires a bit more accuracy with your brush strokes. Doing the corners first, before you get your brush covered in a ton of paint, helps give you more control over paint distribution! When the corners are done, you can now move on to the easy part of painting the middle!

5. Pay Attention To Details.
If you have a solid flat door, then you are going to have a simpler time with this one! However, if your door has intricate carvings and designs, it may be a good idea to cover these areas with tape, paint around them, and then use a finer brush with less paint to avoid flooding the crevices and keep your door looking beautiful!

6. Don’t Be In A Rush!
Take your time doing the project, and we promise you wont regret it! Start early in the day, so that you give the door plenty of time to dry completely before placing the door knobs and hinges back on! You wouldn’t want to ruin all the hard work you just finished!

The Repaint Specialists Latest Exterior Home Project!

Thinking of repainting your home? We think that’s a great idea!

Here in Edmonton, the exterior of our homes have to face a variety of harsh weather conditions, and over time, the paint can become dull, outdated, and sometimes completely non existent!

Just take a look at our latest project, and you will see exactly what we mean…

This beautiful, older, home located in the University area of Edmonton, Alberta required some TLC, and we were more than happy to give it some! As you can see, the rain, harsh winds, and sub zero winters, contrasted with our dry, hot summers, took their toll on the home’s exterior paint. You can see not only has the paint peeled significantly under the window and along the side, but what is remaining of the paint is a faded grey reminiscent of it’s glory days.

Luckily, it was The Repaint Specialists to the rescue!

We understand a project as important as your home requires extensive preparation with no cut corners! Every square inch of this home was power sanded for the smoothest surface possible. Next, we power washed the house and primed all bare surfaces to ensure the best foundation for our paint. We only use the highest quality products and paints at The Repaint Specialists, so for this project we did all the cedar sidings in a gorgeous solid latex stain from Sherwin Williams called “Wood Escape”. This high quality stain not only has amazing covering power, but is also extremely durable (especially important for those of us living in Edmonton). We didn’t hold back on the doors and trim either! We used Surface Enamel: A latex paint that can go over any metal surfaces, in addition to being long lasting on wood!

Take a look at her now, folks! Repainted and restored beyond her former glory. This old house is now a modern looking home that reflects today’s high aesthetic standards and will continue to do so for many years to come. More importantly, the home owners were extremely satisfied, and love pulling up to their driveway!

How To Avoid Painting Disasters With Test Boards

OH, NO!

It was a bit spontaneous, but you did it! You have been promising yourself for years, and now, you were finally going to take this house and turn it into a home: a home that represents you (starting with the living room).

Everything was going right, and you had everything in place!  Brushes? Check. Rollers? Check. Drop sheet? Check. Paint? Double check! In fact, you bought extra paint for good measure! It is a big job, and you made sure you were committed.

You feel your heart sink and your stomach turn in knots as you gaze at the giant streak of grey paint against the wall that, only a few moments ago, was your perfect blank canvas.

All day you had been excited about finally painting your living room your favourite shade of pale blue, but this is clearly a shade of grey. You look down at the costly gallons of paint beside you… It looks blue in the tin and on the paint swatch. Still a little nervous, you decide to keep painting, and see what it looks like dry.

Fast forward a few hours later, and the paint on your (now almost finished) living room walls looks greyer than ever, and right about now, you sure wish you hadn’t have been so eager and ignored that guy in the paint store about using test boards.

DON’T BE THE PERSON IN THIS STORY!

Before rushing into an important project like painting your home, be sure to test out colours, and have patience! We know your excited, but the wait will be worth it. We promise!

Sampling paint on test boards before applying it directly to your walls can save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Often, paint can look different dry than when wet or in the paint can. Lighting can also play a huge part, and your room can look entirely different depending on the time of day, light bulbs used, or shadows cast by furniture or drapings. To make sure the paint you are selecting is perfect for every condition, paint it onto a sample board, let it dry, and carry it around the house to be viewed in different lighting.

A test board also means you can experiment with creative ideas and textures before committing to them on a larger scale!

If that wasn’t enough, you can carry this handy board with you to all the shops giving you the edge and confidence of even the finest interior designers as you select carpeting, furniture, and general room decor to match!
